With the college season now behind us it’s time to get serious about the offseason, it never ends in the beautiful world of basketball!

Who’s making noise in the US?

This week we highlight Winthrop senior Xavier Cooks.

Xavier is fresh off a dominant season playing for the Eagles in which he was named the Big South player of the year, capped off with an invitation to the NCAA All-Star Game at the Final Four last week.

Cooks mirked the competition this season, ranking in the top 5 in scoring, rebounding, assists, blocks, and field goal percentage, that’s probably why head coach Pat Kelsey has such great words to say about him.

Winthrop ran a cool piece on Xav a few months ago that’s worth a watch if you’d like to get to know a little more about one of Australia’s best collegiate players.

Training video we love:

Ever wondered how to use ball screens more effectively? We found this great video which explains four points of emphasis which all players need to improve on. Check it out and put it in to practice.

Who’s next..? A name (or two) to know:

Shouting out two of our Alumni this week! Kristina Moore (July 17) and Dragan Elkaz (April 17, July 17).

Kristina has known for a while she wanted to head down to Florida and become a Gator, receiving her NLI this week and will make it official on the 11th this month. Kristina received multiple D1 offers after touring with our Girls team last July. She has a promising career ahead of her in Gainesville.

Dragan is a classic story of what hard work can do for a young man. After being the 3rd leading scorer on Australia’s U17 team at the World Championships, Dragan still received no scholarship offers.
Dragan dedicated himself to getting better, he worked the entire summer of 2016/17 at our Summer Development Academy, often sleeping on our couches or lounge room floors just to be closer to the gym to work out longer. He then played with AUSA on our 2017 April and 2017 July tours, he was able to show coaches his potential in April then head home and work on what he needed to improve, coming back in July a more complete player who was ready for the AAU style of play and competition.

We are very proud of Dragan for all the hard work he put in and couldn’t be happier for him with his decision to attend UC Riverside this August. Dragan turned down interest from other D1 programs around America as he loved the no BS approach that coach David Patrick took to his recruiting. We all know Dragan currently only tans in front of his PlayStation so the move to California might help him with that!

All the best to both these talented players.

Recruiting information:

Do you really want to make it in college basketball? Do you know how hard players in America are working? We found this cool mini-documentary on one of the best AAU teams in America, the Florida Vipers. These guys are out working HARD, we preach hard work and sometimes players are not willing to put in the effort, have a watch of this and ask yourself if you’re working as hard as you can, or if you REALLY want it!

What’s next for AUSA Hoops?

We head off to Dallas next week to go chase scholarships, look forward to keeping everyone updated on the trip!

Have an awesome weekend!
